The Games of the Olympiad—or more commonly known as the Summer Olympic Games—was first done in Athens, Greece way back in 1896. It is an international and multi-sporting event that happens every four years and is managed by the International Olympic Committee or IOC. Awarding medals for every event has been a tradition dating back to 1904 with the first place getting a Gold Medal, second place receiving a Silver Medal, and third place acquiring the Bronze Medal. The coming 2016 Summer Olympics is known officially as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and is commonly referred to as Rio 2016. The event will officially open on the 5th of August and the closing ceremony will be held on the 21st at the Maracana Stadium. This year’s Olympic Games will be hosted by Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and will mark the first time for a Lusophone and South American City to host the prestigious sporting event. There are 59 qualified countries but more than 205 is expected to participate in the 28 sports events with more than 306 competitions. The events will be held in 35 different venues: Barra da Tijuca will host a majority of the events with some venues scattered throughout Deodoro, Copacabana, and Maracana.
